In 2019 we were delighted to welcome Gary Lumby on board as our non-executive director. A whole year has now passed with Gary in the position, and what a year it’s been! We caught up with him to find out more about his first 12 months with us, as well as his plans for the future.

Tell us about your role as NED at Chuhan & Singh?

My role in the business is strategic in helping shape the business objectives and processes. I also help the business grow its client base and brand awareness.

How has your first year as NED been? What have you been involved in?

My first year has been spent getting to know the business, employees and clients and helping the Partners make some changes in the way the business is run. We’ve also increased the focus on marketing and sales.

What have you enjoyed the most about the role?

As with all my clients the best thing about working in the business is getting to know the leadership team, the employees and the clients. There are always challenges and surprises, but I meet some great people and businesses along the way.

What do you think you bring to the firm?

I hope I bring experience in leadership, strategy and business development, which will all help towards the transformation and growth of the firm over time.

Why do you enjoy working with the team?

That’s easy – Tony, Gursharan and their team are really great people to work alongside, and the way they focus on helping their clients is the same I do for my own, so we have those values in common. It’s a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

What are your plans for Chuhan & Singh over the next 12 months?

I want to ensure that Chuhan & Singh become the accountancy firm of choice for SME’s all across the Tees Valley. There are also plans to expand the client and employee base.

How do you see your role progressing?

I would see even more involvement in marketing and sales, as well as helping with recruitment. These are probably the biggest opportunities to enable the business to grow.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

It’s great to see even a professional services firm that is already well-established and respected like Chuhan & Singh welcome me on board as NED. They recognise the benefits that working with an independent and external board member can bring, which is a great lesson to learn for all businesses no matter what sector or size.

I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to seeing where we can take the company.
