Accountancy apprentice Aleah is our newest apprenticeship recruit, joining us in September 2019. The 16-year-old is currently in her first year, studying an AAT Level 2 course at Middlesbrough College. We caught up with Aleah to find out more about her apprenticeship and role at Chuhan & Singh.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I think it’s good to get experience as well as getting to go to college.

What is involved in your apprenticeship?

I work in the VAT department where I analyse various client’s bank accounts and invoices, entering them into excel and receipt bank software. I also take on other office duties such as filing – and making the tea! Every Tuesday afternoon I attend college to prepare for any assessments. I’m currently working on my second assessment, which is bookkeeping controls.

How does Chuhan & Singh support your apprenticeship?

It’s great to experience what I’m learning at college in a working environment, and my colleagues who have already completed their apprenticeships provide a lot of help and support.

What do you hope to get out of your apprenticeship?

I want to complete my AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) apprenticeship before moving on to my ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), and all the skills that come with it!

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced through your apprenticeship so far?

My first exam, in bookkeeping transactions. I found this challenging because it was all new territory for me, so I didn’t know what to expect from the exam.

What are your career goals?

To become a qualified accountant.

How will your apprenticeship help you reach these goals?

It will help me get the qualifications, and experience, I need to achieve my dream career.

What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

It’s a good opportunity for experience as you’re learning as well as working.
